Biloxi is served by two electric utilities, the city says: Mississippi Power and Coast Electric Power Association. Your bill shows which one serves your address. The city does not run the power grid, so outages go to the utility, not City Hall.

Mississippi Power

Outage alerts. Mississippi Power will text, email or call you about outages at your address, with an estimated restoration time. Text REG to 67797 to sign up, or turn on Outage Alerts under “Alerts and Communications” in your online account. The company says an alert can arrive within 10 minutes of a confirmed outage, with an update within an hour if the restoration time changes. You can set “do not disturb” hours. Text PAUSE to stop alerts for a while, RESUME to restart them and STOP to end them for good.

Coast Electric Power Association

Report Coast Electric outages at 877-769-2372 and find its outage information at coastepa.com.

How Mississippi Power restores service

After a big storm, the company’s restoration page says crews work in this order:

  1. Power plants and the large transmission lines leaving them.
  2. Main feeder lines in each community, along with hospitals, water and sewer plants, and fire and police stations.
  3. Repairs that bring back the most customers in the least time.
  4. Smaller lines, down to the individual lines in neighborhoods.

The company says it does not set priorities by where a home is, a customer’s credit history or how often someone calls. It does not send crews out while conditions are hazardous, and it brings in crews from other areas after major storms. It suggests moving anyone with medical needs to a place with power until service is back.

Downed lines

Stay away from every downed wire, even one you think is a phone or cable line, and do not step in nearby puddles or move anything touching it. Report it to Mississippi Power or Coast Electric and to 911.

Generator safety

From Mississippi Power’s generator safety page:

  • Never run a generator in an enclosed or partly enclosed space; carbon monoxide builds up quickly and cannot be seen or smelled. If you feel sick, dizzy or weak, get to fresh air.
  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet to power the house (“backfeeding”). It can electrocute utility workers and neighbors. A permanent hookup needs a qualified electrician.
  • Keep it dry, and plug appliances into it directly or with a heavy-duty outdoor cord.

Natural gas

Natural gas in Biloxi is supplied by CenterPoint Energy. If you smell gas, leave the building first, then call the gas leak line at 1-888-876-5786. Customer service is 1-800-371-5417.

During a storm

When a hurricane or tropical storm threatens, the city’s advice is to charge phones, keep flashlights and batteries ready, and never run a generator indoors, in a garage or near doors and windows, because of carbon monoxide. More storm planning is in our hurricane prep guide.
